The Green Party congratulated former Co-leader Jeanette Fitzsimons today on her appointment as a Companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit.
Ms Fitzsimons' long service to the Green Party and her 14 years as a Member of Parliament were acknowledged in the Queen's Birthday Honours.
"Jeanette has been an outstanding champion for the environment, for a fair society and for honest politics," said current Co-leader Metiria Turei. "She deserves every accolade.
"The Party is celebrating its 20th anniversary this weekend and Jeanette's work and leadership is a big part of the reason we are an enduring political movement."
Many New Zealanders could thank Ms Fitzsimons for warmer, drier homes, Mrs Turei said, because Ms Fitzsimons was the driving force behind the Government's home insulation scheme, a scheme that was on track to improve 180,000 Kiwi homes.
